BE INSPIRED Milan Design Week 2012

The 51st edition of Milan Design week has come and gone in a flash, showcasing thousands of high quality products destined for the global market.

The new trends at the 2012 Milan Design Week are clearly evidence a sophisticated attention to material. Every project evolves in “a” specific material, respecting its intrinsic qualities and peculiarities. Take, for instance, the “Bois de rose” containers by Massimo Morozzi for Edra: simple geometric modules veneered with strips placed “with no regard for the rules of cabinet-making.” Fabric has reached an all-time high in terms of importance, not so much in terms of patterns or graphics, but as a physical presence: take Patricia Urquiola’s M.a.s.s.a.s. sofa for Moroso, covered with fabric and shaped by asymmetrical lines of stitching, independent of the upholstered base below.

Here’s a snippet of what you could have seen there…

STUDENT PROFILE Rebecca Fitzsimmons

What have you gained from studying at HDS?

-a lot more confidence in my design abilities
-a huge expansion of my knowledge relating to every aspect of design
-a night once a week without kids for me to enjoy learning about design and to enjoy the company of other budding designers.

How have you juggled family with your studies?
It’s not always easy, particularly during the cert 4- trying to paint colour chips with a toddler running around my feet, But all of the work that I’m required to complete at home can usually be done once the kids have gone to bed. I mean, the fact that I was able to continue the course throughout my entire pregnancy and even straight after giving birth to my daughter goes to show that with a bit of time management, and lots of encouragement, it can definitely be done.

What do you love most about design?
I love the feeling of when you get inspired by something, and you begin the design process, and you get on a roll and keep trying new things and adding new things and it’s like you just can’t stop! But when you get to that end result, the feeling of accomplishment is just incredible!

What goals do you have once you have completed your study?
My initial aim is to build brand new homes and, with the diploma of interior design under my belt, decorate them so that they become irresistible to buyers. But week after week, new options and possibilities within the design industry become apparent to me and it’s all just so appealing! So who knows what’ll happen…. the sky’s the limit.

Keep your eye out for Bec and her new adventure with, Visual Masterpiece.

designer profile – Tanya Fogarty

Tanya Fogarty is a Newcastle based interior designer who has worked in the industry for the last 10 years. Tanya, after working as a nurse for several years, started studying interior design via correspondence however quickly moved onto full time work for Urban Basic Design Studio based at The Junction, Newcastle. Tanya worked her way up from assistant to consultant over a 3 year period gaining valuable industry experience. Over the last 7 years Tanya has been building her own small business while juggling family life.

Tanya Interior

Tanya’s current project list includes the seasonal set design for fashion displays at Westfield Kotara and Tuggerah, residential apartments and homes around Newcastle, styling of the Macquarie Designer Home on Glebe Rd Adamstown, and the material selection boards for two apartment developments in Newcastle.

Tanya Bathroom

Tanya’s tips for interior designers starting out is to network. The majority of Tanya’s clients including her work for Westfield, have come from networking events and word of mouth. She cannot advocate more the importance of networking for gaining work. Other tips are to start small by getting your foot in the door either by working for a paint company, kitchen, tile or furniture showrooms. This experience will help you gain valuable knowledge of not only the particular product you are selling but how to work with clients. Tanya also advocates keeping up to date with the latest products and building a good library of samples.

Nicole’s Lounge After – Asymmetrical

The Interior Design & Styling students recently went on a field trip to Domayne at Kotara for a styling session. The staff at Domayne allowed the students to style a space of their choice in either a symmetrical, asymmetrical or radial balance. The students work was then assessed by the class on how the space was working and what could be done differently.

HDS students visit Stuart Pinkerton workshop

On Saturday the 15th of October. A few Design Students accompanied by Jess went to visit the workshop of Stuart Pinkerton, Furniture Designer.

Stuart’s massive workshop is the home to artistic pieces of furniture. Stuart makes a range of retail products, and of course designs and builds ‘one off’s’ for customers for residential & commercial purposes. His process is to visit the home of the client, check out the space in which the piece will be placed, and then design accordingly.

Stuarts creative ability is matched only by his humble attitude to his creations. The experience was both informative and inspirational.

Thank you to Stuart for allowing us to invade his space for just a little while. Tania

We all own a ‘little black dress’. It’s a basic in any wardrobe. Its slimming and unquestionable. However does this extend to our interiors? Here are some examples why we should embrace black.

saturday indesign sydney 2011

Sacha Roberts, HDS Colour Planning & Consulting student, reports on her visit to Saturday Indesign.

We started our day at Café Culture in Surry Hills with a glass of champagne while looking at their funky space and cool chairs. We judged our favourite upcycled design and wandered down to Cloth then to Interface flooring.

After a quick short black to pep us up we headed to Alexandria to Coco Republic which was lavish, the Verve Cliquot was flowing freely, gorgeous antipasto tables and a DJ creating the mood. It was a great day spent with girlfriends meandering around cool furniture, homewares and suppliers with groovy music and lots of champagne.

Can’t wait for Melbourne in Design in 2012.
