DAY TRIP – Sydney Indesign

Once again a few students jumped on the train to head down to Sydney Indesign.

Racing around on the free buses to where the showrooms were scattered throughout Alexandria, Surry Hills, Chippendale and other surrounding suburbs. They opened their doors for an exciting program of product launches, guest speakers, collaborations and parties.

The showrooms displayed the most beautiful array of textures and colours where we were able to talk all things design with the staff and other budding designers.

A few of our highlights were….

Furniture and homeware haven, Planet, celebrated individuality, texture and beautiful materials by hosting noted potter Kris Coad, demonstrating hand-throwing porcelain techniques as a catalyst to discuss the process of design. We also were able to make fabric badges from vintage Japanese fabrics, which we proudly wore all day.

The Reece showroom was transformed into a Swiss Alps paradise, this is where some of us had a memorable experience  meeting (and had a photo taken) with the amazing Shayna Blaze and Darren Palmer.

The Galleria hosted installations of breathtaking innovation and technical sophistication from numerous design studios. Here we took part in entering competitions such as designing a tile pattern for Surface Gallery.

Inlite

At Inlite, we were overwhelmed by the sizable creations of Christopher Boots. Accompanying the product was the new-look creative campaign, a titillating series of provocative photography inspired by ancient, mystical gods and goddesses. Here Arna found her new home in an amazing inflatable gold room featuring  more oversized lighting.

Unfortunately we weren’t able to be apart of whole 3 days and visit everyone but the day was filled with so much fun, food, wine and inspiration.

UPDATE Our New Studio

With over 180L of paint being used so far…where did it all come from?

Our great friends at Taubmans kindly donated all the paint to cover our huge walls and has helped us create an atmosphere ready for learning.

Taubmans are one of the oldest paint brands in the market and have been painting Australian homes for over 110 years. With this in mind, we know we are using superior paint that is going to last…and we don’t have to paint our huge walls for a long time!!!

Hunter Design School Thanks Taubmans and Bristol Kotara for their generosity and support. We look forward to showing off our new studios very soon.

To find out more about Taubmans Paints, be sure to visit Bristol and speak with their lovely staff or check out their website at www.taubmans.com.au.

WELCOME Ana Saiao

Hunter Design School is delighted to welcome our newest trainer, Ana, to the team.
Ana will be training our latest group of students starting in July.

So who is Ana….

Ana has dreamt of becoming a designer since the age of 15 however her parents encouraged her to study pharmacy as it had promising career opportunities in Portugal. So she attained her Pharmacy degree in 1998 and has been working in academia since 2002, lecturing and coordinating courses for Pharmacy at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Whilst she has had a successful career in pharmacy, Ana has always remembered her true passion. She has said, “Being able to study Design has given my life a totally new meaning. I have finally started to discover a new me and the journey has been amazing!  I have realised that there are no boundaries to creativity, imagination, innovation and empathy when creating new values. Nothing beats goal setting to support you achieving a successful future and conquering your ambitions!”

Travels

Ana loves travelling. She finds it gratifying to meet different people and to absorb their unique culture. “Every country has its own smell, taste, shapes and colours… I adore registering all those senses and elements and applying them to create unique concepts and ideas.”
Constantly searching for inspiration in her everyday life, she can be found with her notebook and ipad, sketching and taking photos of things that grab her attention.  “I specially enjoy taking a minute to pause and observe nature. It is a great way of getting ideas for new colour schemes!”

Sketching

“I am keen to share experiences and knowledge with people as passionate as I am for design. I think it will be a win-win process since everyone has a different life experience to share. I will definitely learn and grow as a person and an educator.”

EQUINOX – Any excuse for a road trip!

A few of the design students took advantage of the opportunity for a road trip and joined Donna for Equinox in Sydney. Stopping off along the way we got to see what an Interior Designer really gets up to…

First stop was North Shore timber & hard ware. Donna was on the hunt for ‘the perfect wood’ to include in the great warehouse development. Unfortunately, they did not have the goods.

North Shore Timber and Hardware

Second stop was Gineico (gineicointeriors.com). The studio was so new that it had not even been set up, yet Donna and her ‘Designer’ friends were warmly invited in. We got a one on one tutorial of all things lighting from around the world. We were also lucky enough to be armed with (expensive looking) lighting guides – Thanks Pierluigi, I know I will certainly be recommending you in the future!

Then, onto the main event. Equinox is a trade event for Architects, Landscape Architects and Interior Designers. The event was held at L’Aqua Rooftop Bar, Circular Quay. Attending the event was a great opportunity to hobnob it with industry associates and learn firsthand about both well-established and new building products and interior finishes.

The most exciting part by far was being presented with a lanyard with our business name and our title of – “Interior Designer”!

We consumed delicious hor’dourves and a few glasses of bubbly all while ensuring our business cards had landed in each store holder prize pool for the chance to win prizes, prizes, prizes! But none of us won the highly sought after IPad mini…

Enjoyment

We did however walk away with arms full of bags containing brochures, tile samples, pens, stubby coolers & (my personal favourite) a scale ruler. All in all a great trip.

Pantone Colour of the Year 2013 – Emerald

PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, a lively, radiant, lush green, is the Colour of the Year for 2013.

A colour of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.

Most often associated with brilliant, precious gemstones, the perception of Emerald is sophisticated and luxurious. Since antiquity, this luminous, magnificent hue has been the colour of beauty and new life in many cultures and religions. Also the colour of growth, renewal and prosperity, no other colour conveys regeneration more than green. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity.

“The most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other colour in the spectrum,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.”
